A: You have to get the marriage license before having your ceremony.

Q: IS THERE A WAITING PERIOD BEFORE YOU GET THE MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A: Marriage licenses will be issued immediately during your visit.

Q: ARE YOU CONSIDERED MARRIED ONCE YOU GET THE MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A: No, you must have a ceremony or an exchange of vows. The marriage certificate must also be filled out and signed by two witnesses and the officiant who performed the ceremony or exchange of vows.

Q: DO YOU HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF BERNALILLO COUNTY TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A: No, you don’t have to be a resident of Bernalillo County.

Q: DO THE WITNESSES HAVE TO BE PRESENT WHEN WE GET THE MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A: No, witnesses do not need to be present to obtain the marriage license.

Q: DOES GETTING MARRIED OFFICIALLY CHANGE MY NAME?

A: It does not. To officially change your name, your marriage certificate must be filed in our office, you will then have the option to purchase certified copies which will be used for places such as the Social Security Administration, Motor Vehicle Department, and any other facility that will require proof of marriage.

Q: WHO CAN LEGALLY PERFORM A CEREMONY OR MARRY A COUPLE?

A: Anyone that is licensed, ordained, or certified to perform a ceremony can marry you.

Q: DOES A JUDGE HAVE TO MARRY US?

A: Couples do not have to be married by a judge. Anyone who is ordained or certified to perform ceremonies or exchange of vows can marry the couple.

Q: WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO BRING TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

A: Both applicants are required to provide two current official forms of government issued identification (Driver’s License/ID, Passport, Visa, or original Birth Certificate). Names must match on all forms of identification.

A: There is no appointment necessary to obtain the marriage license, we are currently accepting walk-ins.

A: Yes, both parties need to be present to get the marriage license.

A: We are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
